How to title a sermon series

A series title does three jobs at once: it tells your church what the next few weeks are about, it gives guests a reason to come back, and it becomes the headline of every slide, post and banner. These six habits make it easier.

1. 01

   Short enough to read from the back row

   One to three words is ideal. The title has to work on a slide, a lobby banner, a social square and a phone lock screen. Save the explanation for the subtitle.

   Specific beats clever

   A title that names the real question, like Enough or Unshaken, is easier to invite a friend to than a pun only insiders get.

   Borrow the Bible's own words

   Phrases lifted straight from scripture carry weight and point people back to the text. They also tend to age well, so you can reuse the series years later.

   Let the subtitle do the explaining

   Pair a short, evocative title with a plain subtitle that says what the series is about. Guests read the subtitle. Regulars remember the title.

   Say it out loud

   Announce it the way you would on a Sunday. If it is awkward to say, hard to spell, or sounds like a product launch, keep going.

6. 06

   Check it against the graphics

   A title that suggests an image (Anchor, Storms, Roots) gives your designer something to work with. Abstract titles need a strong visual metaphor to carry them.

Title mistakes to avoid

• Titles that only make sense after week three.
• Puns built on a movie or song your guests may not know.
• Long titles that shrink to unreadable on a phone.
• Reusing last year's title for a different topic, which confuses your sermon archive.
